Los Alamitos Medical Center is proud to be the home of one of the oldest programs in Orange County dedicated to the care and treatment of mental health issues in older adults - the Institute of Geropsychiatry. Growing older should be an enriching experience. However, the physical, mental, and emotional losses that come with age can have a profound impact on people.

This program provides help to those who are experiencing depression, frequent mood swings, increased withdrawal, and even suicidal thinking. Some causes of depression in the elderly may include: stress and loss, genetics, biological factors, and medical conditions.

The Institute of Geropsychiatry has been a part of Los Alamitos Medical Center for more than 15 years. Patients are under the care of a psychiatrist and a medical doctor and are provided 24-hour monitoring and treatment.

The warm and caring members of the Geropsych staff include physicians, social workers, activity and music therapists, RNs, psychiatrists, psychologists, nursing assistants, and a director. Being a part of the Los Alamitos Medical Center and its medical resources is only one of the benefits of the unit.  They also help families find resources for care facilities and perform evaluations.

Sources of help include counseling, cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and medication. If you are concerned about a family member or loved one and would like more information, please call us at 562-799-3234.
